John Wesley Hammill, a tin miner from Cornwall, England, immigrated to Piedmont North Carolina around 1840 in pursuit of gold. The  Hammill family settled in Gold Hill where gold, silver, and copper would be mined for the Charlotte Mint through the 1960’s. Around 1960, Frank, Billy, and Jerry Hammill, descendants of John Wesley, noted significant deposits of shale around their properties and began mining this material for Isenhour Brick and Tile Company in East Spencer, NC. Mining operations expanded to other clay and shale pits for Isenhour Brick as well as to serve other brick and composite material companies. Byproducts of unprocessed gravel, Blue Rock and fill dirt, is also mined in the shale pit. These byproducts remain for sale to the general public. Hammill Construction Co, Inc. was incorporated April 1, 1974. Trucking operations began around 1980 and expanded mid-80’s to haul its mined material as well as aggregates of local quarries. Mason sand screening and delivery was added in 1990. In 1998, the  Company permitted and opened its first owned mine on 72 acres. In 2020, the Company purchased 91 acres of the original shale pit and adjacent properties to continue shale and Blue Rock mining. Today, the Company continues to be owned and  operated by successors of John Wesley and initial corporate owners.
